In the first chapter of our hero’s adventures, they were hired to travel to the distant city of Hadah, in the Dominion of Al Hasadh. His Majesty the Great Dragon Prince of Hadah, Trade Prince Jamal Vazeer, in a bid to improve relations with the world at large, decided to hire the Verenian Watchers to take out a group of ankhegs. Upon arriving in Al Hasadh, the Stellar Alliance saw the corpses of this ankheg threat, apparently already killed by the Trade Prince’s own royal guard. They camped there that night and the next morning approached Trade Prince Vazeer to inquire as to what happened. He had forgotten that original contract, having it handled weeks ago, but had a new problem for the Watchers to take care of.
His Majesty the Great Dragon Prince of Hadah sought the services of the Verenian Watchers to retrieve his stolen property, a magnificent sapphire the size of a small child called the Azure Eye. The sapphire had been stolen by a halfling bard named Eliott King, who had run off with it into the Thundering Sands. The party agreed to pursue this sapphire for a massive sum of gold, far beyond the reach of what they have managed to pull in for a single contract since (12,000gp, to be split between the four of them). They agreed, and set out into the Thundering Sands to pursue Eliott King with the use of a divining rod attuned to the gem.
Along the way through the sands, the Stellar Alliance encountered a strange elemental made entirely of electrical energy: a Spark Elemental. The fight was touch and go, with Stephon being knocked unconscious, but the four managed to pull through and bring their friend back up.
Afterwards, the four of them encountered a site of much destruction. The body of Eliott and his wagon were left in ruins on the ground. It appeared as though his bag of holding had been ruptured and its contents spilled across the sand. Jacuzzi picked up the tatters of this bag of holding, with the hopes of restoring it. With a little investigation, Kat managed to determine that the remains of Eliott seemed to be the result of a blue dragon attack. Bracing themselves, the party carried onwards after the Azure Eye, into the heart of the Thundering Sands.
Eventually, they came across a vast metallic chamber nestled into the mountains at the heart of the storm. In its center was a large metal mesh surrounding a pedestal with three crystals, and along its walls were two metallic rods, and a slot for a third. On the wall opposite to the Watchers there was a massive set of metal doors. They managed to decipher this puzzling area fairly easily, recognizing that the crystals in the center caused lightning to surge throughout the chamber, lighting the rods in the walls and opening the massive set of metal doors.
The adventurers rested that night in the metal mesh. In the morning, they opened the massive doors and went down a long hallway, mostly collapsed, that emptied into a massive chamber filled with riches unimaginable. There, sitting in the center was a stalagmite, and in it the Azure Eye was embedded. As Daryl cautiously approached it to remove the stone, it lurched to life, and a magnificent blue dragon erupted from the sand as the Watchers realized that the stalagmite in question was not a natural feature of the cavern, but the horn of the ancient Berylbane.
Berylbane entertained the thought of a negotiation for a short while, but after tactless comments from Jacuzzi and Stephon (“I know of a black dragon who you might be interested to know” and “Do you desire… companionship?”, respectively), negotiations crumbled and it seemed a vicious fight was imminent. Talking quickly, however, the Watchers managed to convince it to let them leave unharmed. Taking a short rest, they devised a clever plan to try and defeat the dragon, feeling that whatever magical items they could find in his hoard could be invaluable in trying to defeat him. They planned a rouse to lure the great beast out of its lair by convincing it that His Majesty the Great Dragon Prince of Hadah himself had come to take the Azure Eye back, using thaumaturgy to make it sound as if he was yelling from outside the beast’s lair. Berylbane fell for this ruse, hook line and sinker, and the party immediately rushed into the chamber with his hoard, slamming the heavy metal doors shut behind them. It bought them limited time to rob the dragon of his treasures, and they used that time well. Kat managed to find a set of Lightning Resistant Leather Armor, and Arrows of Dragon-Slaying, Stephon found an ancient hammer known as Compensation, and Daryl found a Magical Bird Cage, which she promptly got rid of due to her irrational fear of birds.
Deciding this was enough to try and take on the beast, and figuring it wiser to defeat him from outside of his lair, they rushed out into the desert outside his cave and took him on out there. The battle was long and fierce, but they managed to succeed, bringing him within an inch of his life, and then Newt delivered the killing blow to his morale by leaping into the air and dislodging the Azure Eye from his horn.
After Berylbane’s death, it appeared that the Thundering Sands were no more, that the storm had been tied to his presence and what was once a terrifying nightmare landscape became simple desert terrain. Their travel back was unhampered, and the Trade Prince was impressed with their accomplishments, and the citizens of Hadah were awestruck by the end of the centuries-long storm of the sands. In lieu of most of his reward, Jacuzzi received a plot of land and worked out an arrangement to have it developed by a Hasadhi man named Al’fred. Their contract completed, the Stellar Alliance returned to Vigil to arrange for their next contract.
